Our Work – Filtration and Pumping

Welsh Highland Railways

Springbore were contacted by the Welsh Highland Railways in Ffestiniog. The water system installed and maintained by another company had given years of very poor quality water, which had become worse over recent months due to tree felling around the source dam. The water had failures on pH, turbidity, bacteria and also suffered from high levels of organic colour from peaty land. After carrying out a site survey and full laboratory water test Springbore designed and installed the following system which has given excellent results instantly. The system feeds a holiday home, toilet block, on site cafe and staff facilities.

Dairy farm on a borehole supply

The dairy farm was running on mains water at a cost of around £32,000 per year. The water from the borehole had failures on turbidity, iron, manganese and ammonium. The filtration comprises of 2 parallel turbidity filters, a duplex ion exchange unit with 2 brine bins to give the required salt saturation time, cartridge filter and UV steriliser supplying water 24 hours per day. The system supplies water to all the cattle’s drinking troughs and the dairy’s plate cooler. Taking into account all costs including servicing, salt usage and electricity consumption this system will save the customer in the region of £25,000 per year.

The system comprises of an oxidiser, pH corrector, parallel iron/manganese reduction filters, turbidity filter, 24,000 litres of treated water storage, booster pumps and UV sterilisation.

Luxury camping pod site on a borehole supply

This installation was to provide water at a luxury camping pod / glamping site. The water from the borehole had failures on turbidity, iron and manganese. The filtration comprises of 2 parallel turbidity filters, a duplex ion exchange unit with brine bin, cartridge filter and UV steriliser supplying water 24 hours per day.

Barn conversion on a borehole supply

The system removes high levels of iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide and also fully softens the water and elevates the pH. There is a cartridge filter for removal of particulates down to 5 microns and a UV unit for bacteria sterilisation.

Borehole filtration for a large property

Residential park on a borehole supply – 8 homes

Filtration equipment to deal with low pH (acidic) water and high levels of iron and manganese. Using between 3000-5000 litres per day. The system comprises of an oxidiser, pH corrector, iron/manganese reduction filter, 3,000 litres of treated water storage, booster pumps, particulate removal and UV sterilisation.

Domestic borehole water treatment – 2 properties

Borehole water treatment system. There was limited ceiling height so two units were installed in parallel to give the required service flow rate of treated water for the 2 properties. The iron and manganese removal filters feature an air draw valve to oxidise the iron and manganese as it enters the vessel. This is followed by a sediment filter and the UV unit is installed in the house. The treated water was tested immediately after the installation whilst on site. The results were all well within the drinking water standard limits.

Compact spring water treatment – single dwelling

Whole house treatment installed on a spring water supply. The new customer had blue/green staining in their sinks and bath/shower caused by acidic water (pH 5.8) corroding the copper pipes and heating cylinder. This compact system, housed in a kitchen cupboard, pH corrects (pH now 7.8), removes fine particulates and has a UV steriliser to deal with bacteria present in the water. It has been installed in such a way to aid easier servicing and maintenance.

Shared borehole – 4 properties

Water treatment for 4 properties from a shared borehole.

Well water supply – single dwelling

A well water supply in the customers kitchen runs under the kitchen floor into a new buried tank in the back garden. From here it is drawn by a booster pump, through a pH corrector, cartridge filter and UV, back to the house, pressurised.

Filtration for a farmhouse on a borehole supply

The system has been installed in one of the barns on the working farm. Iron and manganese reduction with pH elevation in one vessel. The control valve has an air intake feature to oxidise the dissolved iron and manganese as it enters the vessel. Water results after installation were all well within the drinking water standard limits.

Borehole water treatment – Ion exchange unit

Borehole treatment using ion exchange. This filtration unit reduces concentrations of iron, manganese, organic matter, ammonium and fully softens the water all in one vessel.

A borehole water treatment system. Iron and manganese reduction with pH elevation in one vessel. The control valve has an air intake feature to oxidise the dissolved iron and manganese as it enters the vessel.

Particulate removal and UV sterilisation

Particulate removal and UV sterilisation for a water supply from a well source. 20 micron cartridge filter followed by a 5 micron cartridge filter, then a UV unit treating upto 2.5m3 per hour @30mJ/cm2.

Various UV units available from 1m3/hour to 300+m3/hour. Features can include UV sensor module, solenoid output for water shut down, volt free contacts for remote alarm, 4-20mA output, lamp change reminder (audible & visual), lamp out indicator.

Shared water supplies

A shared private water supply. Springbore can install a water meter on each property feed. This allows the water usage to be closely monitored. Any consumables or maintenance costs can be split based on water consumption and if an independent electricity meter is installed on the water filtration electricity feed, the cost of this can also be divided between each party.

Well pump replacement

A failed well pump replaced with a stainless steel dry run protected pump.

First water supply

Our installation at a barn conversion. This is the first time the property has had a water supply.

The nearby spring was diverted into a buried water tank, which then overflows to continue feeding the properties further down the valley.

The water analysis showed failures on pH at 5.2, Iron at 500µg/l and coliform bacteria.

A dry run protected, stainless steel well pump was installed in the tank controlled by a pressure switch with a pressure vessel.

The treatment includes a backwashing filter vessel with a mixed media to elevate the pH and remove the iron. After this a long life cartridge filter and high flow UV steriliser, for bacteria control, are installed.

The water test carried out by Springbore after completion shows a pH of 7.4 and the iron level at <100µg/l.

Compact water treatment

Compact under sink water treatment installation. Cartridge filter and UV disinfection. The water pipe from the source tank enters the house under the kitchen sink, through the cartridge filter and UV by gravity for whole house treatment.

Treating water from a stream

This recent installation is to treat a stream water supply. The customer had 2 streams running through their land. Springbore tested both sources and found one to have a very acidic and organic coloured water and the other to have a slightly acidic but clear water. The clear water was further away but we advised the customer that this was the preferred water to treat. Although organic colour can be removed, it involves more frequent maintenance and expense.

The 1100 litre storage tank is filled when the water level drops to 2/3 full. A float switch in the tank then triggers the stream pump to run and fill the tank. A dry run protected water pump then pumps the water through a pH and turbidity filter, with automatic backwash (clean), a 5 micron cartridge filter and UV steriliser. The treated water pH is 7.6 with no bacteria present and at constant mains pressure.

Well water treatment

An upgrade for a customer who had blue/green water staining. This is caused by acidic spring water corroding the copper pipe, which will also eventually cause leaks. Their water pH was 5.6. Springbore installed a compact pH correction vessel and UV unit alongside the existing cartridge filter, in the loft space, to treat the whole house. All copper pipe pre pH filter was removed and replaced with plastic. The water pH afterwards was 7.6 and free from bacteria.

Borehole water treatment

An example of one of our borehole water treatment systems for removing iron & manganese. The water flows through the iron/manganese filter which has an air draw feature to oxidise the iron and manganese out of solution. The cartridge filter is for fine sediment removal. This allows the UV to give optimum light transmission for bacteria control.
