Our Work – Filtration and Pumping

Borehole water for a dairy farm

A filtration system for a dairy farm that uses over 100,000 litres of water per day. The borehole pump and filtration system will save the farm around £70,000 per year from the cost of mains water, so covering the cost of the system within 12 months. The system comprises turbidity filters, iron and manganese reduction filters and two Saphir 10 UV steriliser units. Preston, Lancashire.

Welsh Highland Railways

Springbore were contacted by the Welsh Highland Railways in Ffestiniog. The water system installed and maintained by another company had given years of very poor quality water, which had become worse over recent months due to tree felling around the source dam. The water had failures on pH, turbidity, bacteria and also suffered from high levels of organic colour from peaty land. After carrying out a site survey and full laboratory water test Springbore designed and installed the following system which has given excellent results instantly. The system feeds a holiday home, toilet block, on site cafe and staff facilities.

Dairy farm on a borehole supply

The dairy farm was running on mains water at a cost of around £32,000 per year. The water from the borehole had failures on turbidity, iron, manganese and ammonium. The filtration comprises of 2 parallel turbidity filters, a duplex ion exchange unit with 2 brine bins to give the required salt saturation time, cartridge filter and UV steriliser supplying water 24 hours per day. The system supplies water to all the cattle’s drinking troughs and the dairy’s plate cooler. Taking into account all costs including servicing, salt usage and electricity consumption this system will save the customer in the region of £25,000 per year. Preston, Lancashire.

Residential park on a borehole supply – 50 homes

Filtration equipment to deal with low pH (acidic) water, high levels of iron and manganese and turbidity. Using between 10,000-20,000 litres per day. The system comprises of an oxidiser, pH corrector, parallel iron/manganese reduction filters, turbidity filter, 24,000 litres of treated water storage, booster pumps and UV sterilisation. Harden, West Yorkshire.

Borehole filtration for a large property

The filtration is for the reduction of turbidity, iron and manganese and also pH elevation. The water is stored in a 3000 litre WRAS approved potable water tank, boosted to the house by a variable speed booster pump through a UV steriliser. Bury, Greater Manchester.

An industrial water softener

This water softener was sized to provide up to 26,000 litres of fully softened water per hour. Lake District.

Domestic water softeners

We have installed many domestic water softeners and cabinet softeners for use on borehole, spring and mains water supplies. A water softener helps with skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. It preserves the life of all water appliances such as coffee machines, ice makers, dishwashers, water heaters and laundry equipment. Softened water keeps hair clean & smooth, uses less soap and shampoo because of the rich lather softened water and soap produces. Softer clothes without hard minerals trapped in the fabric. Fabrics last longer and whites stay whiter.

Luxury camping pod site on a borehole supply

STABLES & EQUESTRIAN CENTRES

This installation was to provide water at a luxury camping pod / glamping site. The water from the borehole had failures on turbidity, iron and manganese. The filtration comprises of 2 parallel turbidity filters, a duplex ion exchange unit with brine bin, cartridge filter and UV steriliser supplying water 24 hours per day. Settle, North Yorkshire.

Hybrid private water supply system

The system runs primarily on the spring water supply but during extended dry spells the spring can run low or stop completely. When the water level in the tank drops to 50% a float switch engages a solenoid valve to open which tops the tank up with treated borehole water. Bury, Greater Manchester.

Borehole filtration for a single property.

The old system installed and maintained by another company was not reducing the levels of iron & manganese. The system also fed loft tanks, from which the water was pumped to feed the hot & cold outlets. The tanks were dirty, had ill fitting lids and the pump was a noisy distraction, especially during the night.
The loft tanks were removed from service and piped directly through to feed the house. The new system is designed for the reduction of iron & manganese and also softens the water. The treated water is then stored in the WRAS approved potable water tank. From here it is pumped by a variable speed booster pump on demand, through a cartridge filter and UV steriliser. This removes the possibility of bacterial recontamination and the noise of a pump running in the house every time a tap is used. Gisburn, Lancashire.

Well pump replacement

A failed well pump replaced with a stainless steel dry run protected pump. Keighley, West Yorkshire.

First water supply

Our installation at a barn conversion in High Peak, Derbyshire. This is the first time the property has had a water supply.

The nearby spring was diverted into a buried water tank, which then overflows to continue feeding the properties further down the valley.

The water analysis showed failures on pH at 5.2, Iron at 500µg/l and coliform bacteria.

A dry run protected, stainless steel well pump was installed in the tank controlled by a pressure switch with a pressure vessel.

The treatment includes a backwashing filter vessel with a mixed media to elevate the pH and remove the iron. After this a long life cartridge filter and high flow UV steriliser, for bacteria control, are installed.

The water test carried out by Springbore after completion shows a pH of 7.4 and the iron level at <100µg/l.

Treating water from a stream

This recent installation is to treat a stream water supply. The customer had 2 streams running through their land. Springbore tested both sources and found one to have a very acidic and organic coloured water and the other to have a slightly acidic but clear water. The clear water was further away but we advised the customer that this was the preferred water to treat. Although organic colour can be removed, it involves more frequent maintenance and expense.

The 1100 litre storage tank is filled when the water level drops to 2/3 full. A float switch in the tank then triggers the stream pump to run and fill the tank. A dry run protected water pump then pumps the water through a pH and turbidity filter, with automatic backwash (clean), a 5 micron cartridge filter and UV steriliser. The treated water pH is 7.6 with no bacteria present and at constant mains pressure. Bacup, Lancashire.
